2024 Election Result

Matthew Green was just 1,624 votes behind the Conservatives

Thank you to everyone who voted for Liberal Democrat candidate Matthew Green at the General Election here in South Shropshire. We said it was going to be close, and it was. Unfortunately, the Conservatives held onto the seat with Matthew just 1,624 votes behind. There was a 22.4% swing from the Conservatives to the Lib Dems.

Since 4th July, we've heard from many residents who regret voting Labour in South Shropshire. The local Labour Party put out leaflets claiming the race was between them and the Conservatives with the Lib Dems in fourth place. In reality, Labour came fourth, more than nine thousand votes behind the Lib Dems.

The Liberal Democrats excelled across Shropshire, coming top with 48,940 votes, compared to the Conservatives with 40,108 votes and Labour in third place on 33,294.

Nationally, we are thrilled that the Liberal Democrats had their best ever election with 72 MPs – the largest third party group in 100 years.

Locally, Matthew will now put his efforts into supporting the Liberal Democrat campaign to topple the Conservatives from Shropshire Council at the elections in May 2025.
